Number of Samples Needed:

  • Non-Friable Suspected Materials: At least 2 samples needed. If the product is glued down or multi-layered, all layers must be tested, including the adhesive/glue/mastics and other underlayment, bringing the total to 4 or maybe even 6 samples.

  • Surfacing or Friable Materials areas less than 1,000sqft: At least 3 samples.

  • Surfacing or Friable Materials areas 1,000sqft to 5,000sqft: At least 5 samples.

  • Surfacing or Friable Materials areas greater than 5,000sqft: At least 7 samples.

Example: You’re getting ready to remodel a 200sqft room in your basement and have asbestos concerns regarding the ceiling texture and glued down flooring tile. The ceiling would be considered friable and require (3) samples, while the floor tile itself would need (2) samples. However, if the flooring is glued down or has an underlayment, the glue/mastic or underlayment would require (2) samples, bringing your total samples to (7): (3) samples for the ceiling and (4) for the flooring.
